We came across a video tour of our customer’s production facility and unexpectedly noticed an unusual way the weigh filler was being used. The NOTIS service team contacted the company directly and found out what was happening.

We heard this short exchange during a video tour of a dry pet food production facility in Saratov, Russia (see 43:10 in the video below, Russian lang). The host was shown the production process, ingredients and packaging area, including the NOTIS line.
For this company, we supplied equipment for filling dry pet food into pre-made bags and sacks weighing 3–30 kg (DVDD-30-2Rch-GPK), as well as a third-party heat sealer.

What Caught Our Engineers’ Attention

After filling, an operator places each bag on a check scale and manually adds a few grams of product, bringing the weight to an exact 2,000 g.
With a properly organized filling process, there is no need to check and correct every package by hand. That is why we immediately sent the video to the NOTIS service team.
Every Bag Does Not Have to Weigh Exactly 2,000 g

In industrial packaging, there is no need to make every package weigh exactly the same down to the gram. For a nominal weight of 2,000 g, Russian standard GOST 8.579-2019 allows a negative deviation for individual packages, while the average net content of the batch must not be below the nominal value.
For a 2,000 g package, the tolerable negative deviation is 1.5%, or 30 g. Therefore, a small deviation from exactly 2,000 g does not by itself mean that the filling process is inaccurate.
In industrial packaging, the target weight is sometimes deliberately set slightly below the nominal value and each package is then manually topped up to the exact weight. With NOTIS weigh fillers, there is no need for this approach: the system automatically corrects the filling process, takes deviations from previous cycles into account and keeps the average batch weight at the required level.

NOTIS algorithms analyze the results of previous filling cycles and automatically adjust the product feed. Most of the target weight is filled quickly at first, then the feed rate is gradually reduced for accurate final filling.
The parameters are continuously adjusted to match the properties of the product, including flowability, granule size, moisture content and other factors. If one fill differs slightly from the target, the system takes this into account in subsequent cycles and keeps the average weight at the required level. In the event of significant underfilling, the machine alerts the operator with a red indicator signal.
There is therefore no need to repeatedly reweigh and manually top up every package.
There Is a Second Factor

The weigh filler shown in the video was originally selected for filling 3–30 kg, while in this particular episode the company is filling 2 kg packages.
The machine can work with this fill weight, but the variation may be somewhat greater than within its specified operating range. This is due to the parameters of the weighing system and the sensitivity of the load cells selected for larger fill weights.
Why We Contacted the Customer Ourselves
The customer confirmed that they are satisfied with the line. However, this story is important to us for another reason: even when a customer has not raised a complaint, we prefer to investigate and explain any unusual equipment operation we notice.
Sometimes companies carry over habits formed while working with less accurate weighing systems: additional reweighing, manual top-ups, and constant checking of every package. With NOTIS weigh fillers, this approach is unnecessary.
Manual top-up is not an extra guarantee of quality. It is an unnecessary operation that takes time, reduces output and increases labor costs.
