Bay leaf on a DVK-NOTIS multi-head weigher
Bay leaf needs a special approach to dosing and packaging. NOTIS has developed dedicated versions of automated packaging systems and budget filling machines for bay leaf, spices and herbs.
Bay leaf is a difficult-flowing product. On ordinary low-cost linear weighers, leaves cling together, stick and form stacks. When only 1 gram remains to complete the dose, several grams can fall at once.
That is why spice producers often choose packaging lines with a multi-head weigher. The product is distributed across multiple buckets, and the controller selects the best weight combination. This gives high accuracy and good output, but can be too expensive for small businesses.
NOTIS has specialized in weight dosing for more than 30 years and has manufactured multi-head weighers for 25 years. We design and build the machines ourselves, using our own electronics and software.

For high accuracy and output
Bay leaf is often packed in small 10-20 g doses, where accuracy matters. Excess weight means product loss; underweight packages create legal and retail risks. Multi-head weighers can keep the error within the selected limits while maintaining stable output.
Packaging
Bay leaf is traditionally packed in paper bags. The package is formed automatically from laminated paper roll stock, which protects the product from moisture and seals well on the packaging machine.
Line composition
- VFFS machine with a multi-head weigher
- Feeding conveyor and vibrating screen
- Automatic belt loader
- Discharge conveyor
Output
Bay leaf flutters while falling. At high speeds, it is harder to keep packages neat and prevent leaf fragments in the seals. For bay leaf, about 40 packs per minute is usually optimal.
Budget solution
Lower output and wider tolerance
If you are starting production or need a lower-cost solution, consider VFFS machines with linear weighers. NOTIS dosing algorithms use dynamic product flow control to improve accuracy even on difficult products.
For bay leaf we offer two-stage dosing: a wide flow for the main part of the dose and a narrow flow for careful final dosing. See the budget MDU-NOTIS-04M-1Rch-2K machine in action:
Manual weighing
The most budget option is the MUSP-NOTIS manual packaging machine with manual weighing. The operator forms neat three-seal pillow bags from roll film.
Service
NOTIS has manufactured dosing and packaging machines for more than 25 years. Customers receive lifetime service consultation, and most service questions can be diagnosed remotely through messengers or online connection.
